Partners in the Gospel

Published by Daniel under Sermons

Bible Reading: Philippians 1:1-11

Preacher: Mike Goheen

This Sunday at Tregear we begin a series on the letter to the Philippians. Our passage, Phil 1:1-11, is a most wonderful expression of warm friendship from Paul to the Philippian church, forged through their partnership in the gospel. Christ is exalted, and their warm relationship is celebrated. It is a reminder to us of what a gift God has given to us in our own church family, as we partner in the gospel together.

I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today.” Deuteronomy 29:12-15

A People Who Know God’s Presence

Published by Daniel under Sermons

Bible Reading: Exodus 33:12-23

Preacher: Mike Goheen

Have you ever wondered about the purpose of the Old Testament tabernacle? God’s presence is with His people Israel through the tabernacle. In Exodus tabernacle is built and God comes to dwell with his people. Importantly, God’s dwelling with his people gets increasingly intimate throughout the biblical story—tabernacle, temple, Jesus, Spirit, full presence of Triune God in new creation (Rev. 21:3). This Sunday we will see that the tabernacle is not only a symbol of God’s presence, but a symbol for the mission of the church - for it is God’s presence that makes His people an attractive people for their mission to the world.

Covenant Lecture Part 1

Published by Daniel under Lecture

This is the first of two lectures given by Mike Goheen on covenant. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties the first 15mins of the lecture were not recorded. The recording picks up from the beginning of Mike’s second section - Historical Unfolding of Covenants. The full set of notes can be made available but here is what is missing from the recording, with some extra notes in italics:

Introduction

  • Personal relationship not enough
  • Covenant relationship: central image  (one of, if not the most important ways our relationship with God is described.)
  • Two problems: 1) unknown (People don’t talk about it)   2) familiarity (used so much it has lost its meaning)

Historical Unfolding - Quick Overview

  • Noahic Covenant (Gen. 6:18; 9:1-17)  - preserve and redeem the earth
  • Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12, 15, 17)  - God promised to make Abraham’s descendants into a great people -  to bless them and others through them.
  • Siniatic Covenant (Ex. 19-24)
  • Davidic Covenant (2 Sam. 7)
  • New Covenant (Jer. 31:31ff; Luke 22:20ff; Heb. 8-10)

How Can You Be Sure Christianity is the Right Religion?

Published by Daniel under Sermons

Bible Readings: John 14:5-10; Romans 4:1-3

Preacher: Peter Crickitt

This Sunday we will address the question: ‘With so many religions in the world, how can you be sure Christianity is the right one?’  The challenge isn’t new. Jesus claim to be the unique Son of God, the Creator and Restorer of the world, has jarred with the competing claims of culture since the 1st century: ‘Into the Roman Empire of the first century, shaped as it was by the humanism, rationalism, secularism, and naturalism of the pagan Greek world, stepped Jesus of Nazareth. (Goheen and Bartholomew)’.

Yet those who encounted Jesus’ majesty and love, and whose eyes the Holy Spirit opened to see His glory, proclaimed with Thomas, ‘My Lord and my God’.

Does God Exist?

Published by Daniel under Sermons

Bible Reading: Romans 1:18-25

Preacher: Daniel opdeVeigh

“To the believer all things speak of God; the whole universe is the mirror of his perfections. There is not an atom of the universe in which his everlasting power and deity are not clearly seen… This witness of God is so powerful, accordingly, that almost no one denies its reality. All humans are peoples have heard something of the voice of the Lord.” Herman Bavinck
