Bible Reading: Luke 3:1-20
Preacher: Daniel opdeVeigh
The ministry of John the Baptist is a bit like the opening celebration of the winter Olympics. The opening ceremony advertised the beginning of a dazzling two weeks of winter sport. John the Baptist doesn’t have the sparkle of opening night: he wears camel’s hair and emerges from the wilderness. Yet this humble man has the appearance and presence of the prophets in the Old Testament. Two weeks of sport is a non-event next to John’s announcement: he heralds a new age for the whole world, beginning with the coming of Israel’s King! Forgiveness of sins is offered! The powerful are brought down and the humble are exalted.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:21-52
Preacher: Mark Glanville
The true story of the world is that God is redeeming the world through Jesus Christ. Other stories compete for our attention. Such as the secular western story that says that there is no God and that the best we can do is to try and be happy. Or the consumerist story that says that accumulating goods will give us fulfilled lives. The true story of the would is the story of what God is doing and ‘that universal story that will ultimately embrace the whole of creation, time and humanity within its scope’ (as Cris Wright says). Our passage this Sunday tells the true story of the world.
Sermon Outline:
1. Stories and our view of the world
2. Luke 2:21-52 God’s story advances
3. Our part in God’s story

Bible Reading: Luke 1:67-2:7
Preacher: Mark Glanville
Jesus was born into a world where Caesar Augustus ruled the Roman Empire with an iron fist. Yet when Jesus was born, shepherds, angels and even stars in the sky declared Him to be King. Indeed with Jesus’ birth God stakes His sovereign claim over His world - as He does a clash of Kings begins: the reign of Augustus vs the reign of God. This Sunday at Tregear we will trace this clash of Kings in Luke 1:67-2:7.

Preacher: Peter Crickitt
The big message of the book of Hebrews that we have been studying is: JESUS IS BETTER: better than Moses, better than the priesthood, the OT sacrifices - than anything else that we might be silly enough to put in His place. This Sunday at Tregear we will be finishing our series on Hebrews, with Chapter 13. Peter Crickitt will be talking about the implications of the all surpassing greatness of Christ for our lives.

Christians are people who wait and hope. We don’t see everything that we have in Christ now – much is kept in heaven for us. This Sunday we are encouraged to look to Christ in whom we have all we need to persevere.

Jesus is better! Better than anything we might try to replace Him with. In the passage today Jesus brings a better covenant: For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah (Hebrews 8:8) Now, in Christ, God’s people will love him and serve Him with all their heart.
